English composer writing large orchestral and choral works, string quartets and chamber pieces, along with solos for many instruments. Has composed for film and had pieces played and broadcast world-wide. The music is often melodic and contrapuntal, but can have other-worldly sounds, too, expanding the usual ranges and textures of instruments.
